Andrew Cuomo is presenting himself as a sensible, competent executive who can pull New York City back from its current leadership crisis. His candidacy announcement video claims that he will bring back a new era of effective and capable good government to New York City. Cuomo hopes New Yorkers will forget that he spent a decade as governor pushing austerity and cutting funding to our basic social services, including those he claims to care so much for. From schools, transportation, housing, and higher education, Cuomo pushed the interests of the rich donor class over working New Yorkers.

On March 1, Cuomo released a seventeenminute video announcing his official entry into the crowded New York City Democratic primary for mayor His decision came after months of gossip and speculation that he might run, following Mayor Eric Adams’s public disgrace in the wake of a federal indictment on corruption charges,…

A new Illinois bill aims to add some oversight of families who homeschool their children, a response to concerns that the state does little to ensure these students receive an education and are protected from harm.

The measure, known as the Homeschool Act, comes after an investigation by Capitol News Illinois and ProPublica last year found that Illinois is among a small number of states that place virtually no rules on parents who…

Growing up in Brazil around the turn of the millennium, I was too young to have lived through the violent years of the military dictatorship that lasted almost two decades through the mid-1980s. But my parents remember it well. In the 1970s, at the height of the regime, they were both medical students entering a public state university in Rio de Janeiro. My parents recalled seeing older people in the classroom who weren’t actual students, but undercover informants for the government. Some of their classmates were disappeared never to be seen again, while the “lucky” ones returned after days or weeks with accounts of beatings and torture.

The dictatorship wasn’t openly discussed at my mother’s home. And because of…

  • One founder instead looks for “burstable bandwidth” where workers can ramp up when needed.

For Googlers working on AI, 60 could be the new 40.

Sergey Brin sees working about 60 hours a week as “the sweet spot of productivity.”

In addition to recommending that workers focusing on Gemini, the company’s AI model, go well beyond the 40 hours typical of many workplaces, the Google cofounder advised in a recent memo that they consider being in the office “at least” every weekday, according to The New York Times.

“In my experience, about 60 hours a week is the sweet spot of productivity,” Brin wrote in the memo published in full by The Verge. “Some folks put in a lot more but can burn out or lose…

Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency began its cost-cutting efforts by dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development, which spends about $22 billion per year, about 0.3 percent of overall federal spending. DOGE has since targeted agencies focused on children’s education, protecting the natural world, and food safety.

But after more than a month running roughshod through government, DOGE has made strikingly few cuts at the Pentagon, whose bloated budget tips the scales at around $850 billion — accounting for about 13 percent of federal spending.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth encouraged DOGE to hack away at his department on X last week. “We welcome DOGE and finding those efficiencies is how we save taxpayer dollars.” But experts question just how open the Pentagon really is to DOGE, and whether Musk’s merry band of bean-counters has the mettle to do battle with the…

Judge temporarily blocks Trump administration’s mass firings of federal workers

A federal judge in California has ruled that the Office of Personnel Management must rescind memos directing agencies to carry out mass terminations of probationary employees, stating that the agency exceeded its legal authority.

OPM is also required to inform other federal agencies that it had no power to issue such a directive.

While the ruling does not prevent individual agencies from terminating probationary employees at their discretion, the judge emphasized that OPM cannot mandate such actions.

In the fall of 1984, when I was a senior in high school in Washington, DC, the protests at the South African Embassy began. Civil rights leaders met with the ambassador of South Africa on Thanksgiving Eve. Timed for maximum press coverage, that meeting became a sit-in, and that sit-in launched a movement. Soon, there were protests at consulates across the country. College students held rallies, built “shantytowns,” and pushed their schools to divest.

Area high school kids like me got in on protesting the embassy too. And we had a soundtrack. “Free Nelson Mandela” had been released by the Specials in March. The leader of that British ska band, Jerry Dammers, later admitted he didn’t know much about Mandela before he went to an anti-apartheid concert in the UK, where a long-simmering boycott movement was…

Trump appointee Lori Chavez-DeRemer found herself facing a tight committee vote Thursday morning to head the Department of Labor. The question: was she too pro-worker for the job?

Apparently not.

On Thursday, the same Senate committee where the bill repeatedly died—Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP)—voted to move forward her nomination to lead the federal Labor Department. Sens. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) joined Republicans in support, offsetting Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) “no” vote. The Democratic support in committee means Chavez-DeRemer will…

Wearing comfy clothes to school (while still looking fashionable) doesn’t have to be an impossible feat, especially on those mornings when all you can do is lie in bed and count down the hours until spring break and warmer days arrive. It makes sense: Amidst cancelled classes, brisk weather, dress codes, and general spring semester malaise, getting ready at the crack of dawn and trekking across campus seem less than ideal.

However, layering closet staples can go a long, warm way, not only for braving outdoor conditions but also for oftentimes-unpredictable classroom temperatures. Will you sweat with the heater on blast or be jolted awake by the cold in math class? It’s a question as old as time.

Whether you opt for a well-loved oversized hoodie, pajamas you claim to be cozy yoga pants, or cozy socks that are actually shoes, wearing cross-seasonal basics you can bundle up is the way to go. Below, Teen Vogue spoke with three students on…

On Monday, February 17, in a series of demonstrations across Indonesia, students challenged President Prabowo Subianto. The protests continued all week, culminating in major events on Friday. Organized under the hashtag #IndonesiaGelap or #DarkIndonesia, the protesters oppose a range of the new administration’s policies, including budget cuts of Rp306.7 trillion (US$19 billion), the role of the military in domestic governance, nepotism, corruption, and the surprisingly controversial free school lunch program.

President Prabowo’s austerity measures triggered the angry outbursts. University students fear deep cuts to funding for schools will hurt their education. Others point to poorly funded government offices…
